Vendor Profiles: Southern Swiss Dairy

Southern Swiss Dairy, LLC

The next time you visit the Mainstreet Statesboro Farmer’s Market, be sure to bring your cooler and some cold packs. That way, you’ll be able to visit Southern Swiss Dairy’s tent and take home some of the area’s richest milk, butter, cream, and ice cream.

“We’ve been in the dairy business since 1992,” said Ginny Franks, who along with her husband, Jimmy, owns the Burke County dairy. “We’re the fifth generation of the family to operate the farm.” With more than 1,000 acres, the Franks milk about 160 Brown Swiss, Holstein, and crossbred cows. They carefully control what the cows eat so that the milk they produce is free of artificial growth hormones.

Until last winter, the Franks sold their milk to a cooperative, but as co-op prices dropped, they decided to take a different route. They now process and bottle their own milk, and they market the milk and other dairy products under their farm’s name, Southern Swiss Dairy.

“We have a busy life,” said Ginny, “growing corn, oats, and soybeans, caring for the cows, processing the milk, and making deliveries from Waynesboro to Augusta to Savannah and to Swainsboro. We offer tours of the farm for students and visitors, and we show our prize-winning cows at national livestock expos.”

Southern Swiss Dairy is located just outside of Waynesboro. Brown Swiss are one of the oldest and most productive dairy breeds.
