Market Profile: Hunter Cattle Company's Del and Debra Ferguson

Del Ferguson grew up on a cattle ranch in Appling County, so it’s not surprising to find that he and his wife Debra are the driving force behind Hunter Cattle Company, located on Driggers Road in Brooklet. From a herd of about 200 cattle they produce all-natural grass-fed beef, a meat that is free of antibiotics, growth hormones, steroids, and pesticides.

“We’ve been in the cattle business for more than 7 years,” said Ferguson, “but we’ve been certified for nearly two of those years. Our certification comes from the American Grassfed Association, a national organization dedicated to grassfed animals. When cattle forage and feed on grass, it’s better for the animal, better for the environment, better for the rancher, and ultimately, better for the consumer.” They are also members of the Animal Welfare Approved organization, founded in 2006 as a market-based solution to growing consumer interest in how farm animals are raised and desire to know how, and where, their food is produced.

Visitors to the Mainstreet Statesboro Farmers Market can pick up their Hunter’s beef on Saturday mornings, and according to Ferguson, they can buy anything “from a pound of beef to the whole cow!” The beef –steaks, chops, roasts, ground meat—is frozen and available on the spot.

“Not only is it fresh and local, but this grassfed beef is lower in calories and cholesterol, four times higher in vitamin D, and rich in antioxidants,” says Ferguson. “It’s really healthier for you and your family.”
